Even though education system has been acknowledged to develop in a steady pace in the past century, widespread illiteracy still is a social issue in many countries.
There are several downsides of having a lion’s share of illiterate population. First, the rate of crimes might be skyrocketing and disturb the social order. The most common reason for illiteracy is not the irreversible physical or biological deficiency such as dyslexia, but the personal will and desire to escape school or challenge the authority. As a result, these students who miss the proper moral education in schools tend to possess less sense of social responsibility or the consciousness of doing the right thing. For instance, they might perceive stealing, robbery, or even murdering as something cool and brave. The society could consequently suffer from disorder. Besides, reading is inevitable for establishing common sense. For example, reading medical-related articles informs readers of information like healthy diet, ways of exercising, or even the symptoms of diseases.
The government can implement a few regulations to eliminate the side effect of such phenomenon. First, in order to diminish the possibility of expanding illiterate population, government should increase investment in education in poor areas and set up special funds for education in poor areas. To be more specific, the subsidy could be used to put forward the plan for universal access to compulsory education, strengthen supervision of law enforcement of compulsory education, increase the enrollment rate of children, and reduce the dropout rate. Furthermore, to compensate for the existing population that lack basic education, government could establish social welfare bureaus that provides free reading courses for illiterate people, encouraging them to find their value in books instead of crimes.
In conclusion, high illiteracy could result in detrimental influence, so it is now time to address the situation.
