Whether to require students to take classes in many subjects or to specialize in one specific subject has long been a controversy among universities. In my view, learning different subjects can be more beneficial.
To begin with, studying different subjects exposes students to much varied information. The frequently involved compulsory disciplines in the university are often related to Mathematics, Science, History and many others, which complete every single aspect of students’ common sense for living as a part of the society. For example, students have to be equipped with the logical thinking ability obtained through math to be able to sort out complex information; knowing the ups and downs of the country encourages them to step forward, out with old and in with the new; and even daily discussion with peers calls for some conceptions of the world political situation. Hence, mastering various subjects is fundamental for students.
Furthermore, students would be able to meet more acquaintances with different perspectives by attending diverse courses. For example, students that studies Art might perceive the world in a different way comparing to those studying Mathematics, with the former one being more creative and spiritual and the latter one being more cautious and logical. In this case, students taking several different courses are more likely to meet different people and learn from their experience than students specializing in one subject.
In addition, knowledge equals to an edge over others in career development. Possessing integrated knowledge, students would become more appealing in the eyes of a future employer. A company manager would want to hire people with both professional and extensive grasp of skills; this would put students with one specialty at a disadvantage. Therefore, having a wide range of knowledge would contribute to the students' professional status.
In conclusion, I believe it is obvious that requiring students to know different subjects would benefit their students the most., for a wide range of knowledge would drastically improve different aspects of the students' lives: work, school and their social lives as well.
